b. Describe the cultural developments and individual contributions in the 1920s of the Jazz Age (Louis Armstrong), the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes), baseball (Babe Ruth), the automobile (Henry Ford), and transatlantic flight (Charles Lindbergh)

SS5H3 Explain how the Great Depression and New Deal affected the lives of millions of Americans.

a. Discuss the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, the Dust Bowl, and soup kitchens.

Essential Questions:

How did individuals such as Louis Armstrong, Langston Hughes, Babe Ruth, Duke Ellington, Margaret Mitchell, and Jesse Owens influence American culture?

How did individuals such as Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh change the face of American transportation?

How did Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt handle the problems facing Americans during the Great Depression?

Students will research their topics for the social studies fair.

Students will work on citing information and constructing an outline.

Continue working on social studies fair.

Thursday:

Ticket in the door:  Why did Americans change their life styles after WWI?

Student will take notes on the Roaring twenties.

Students will take notes and draw pictures of historical figures

Students will watch videos for three of the figures.

1)      Louis Armstrong

2)      Babe Ruth

3)      Langston Hughes

Work on Social Studies Fair  

Work on Outline and thesis

Friday:

Ticket in the Door: Where is Louis Armstrong from?

Student will continue taking notes on the Roaring twenties.

Students will take notes and draw pictures of historical figures

Students will watch videos on two of the figures.

1)      Henry Ford

2)      Charles Lindbergh

Students will have time to work on their outline and thesis in class.
